The EU DPP Registry, hosting and data storage

Understand what the EU DPP Registry stores, who hosts complete passports and how registration differs from product compliance.

The EU operates the DPP Registry, but it is not a central host for every complete product passport. The Registry holds the prescribed registration information and identifiers; the full passport data remains in a decentralised system.

Does the EU host Digital Product Passports?

Answer checked:

The EU operates the DPP Registry, but it is not a central host for every complete product passport. The Registry holds the prescribed registration information and identifiers; the full passport data remains in a decentralised system.

The responsible economic operator or its service provider maintains the passport data under the relevant rules. Registration does not transfer responsibility to the Commission and is not a certificate that the product or its data is compliant.

Choose and test the passport storage, access, update and continuity arrangements separately from the registration process. Do not assume that registering an identifier uploads all your product files to the EU.

Where is DPP data actually stored?

Answer checked:

The full passport data is stored by the responsible economic operator or an authorised service provider, rather than all being stored in the EU Registry. A QR code or other carrier connects the identifier to the relevant digital record; it does not itself store the complete governed passport.

ESPR Articles 10 and 11 require arrangements for availability, a backup, access rights and controlled updates. Battery Articles 77 and 78 have their own storage, provider-use and continuity rules. The law does not prescribe one universal cloud provider or require blockchain.

Before choosing a service, test data export, access permissions, backup and recovery, retention and what happens if the operator or provider stops operating. Identify the applicable product rules before deciding public fields or storage geography; “decentralised” is not permission to ignore security or other applicable law.

What is the EU DPP Registry?

Answer checked:

It is the Commission’s central system for the registration information and identifiers needed to find and check DPP registrations. ESPR Article 13 establishes it, and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1778 sets registration, verification and storage arrangements.

The Commission announced the Registry and testing environment operational on 20 July 2026. Its launch is an infrastructure milestone, not a rule that every product now needs a passport. Under the implementing rules, prescribed submissions are checked and a persistent registration identifier is generated; that process does not independently certify the underlying product.

Start with the product-specific duty and relevant date. Then confirm who registers, which identifiers and registration data are required and which current Commission procedure applies. Battery Article 77(10) also requires the unique identifier to be uploaded to the ESPR Registry; read it with the battery rules.
